Who we are

makethempay.ca is a software service. Legal services on this site are provided by Mithril Law — Jonathan Kleiman, licensed Ontario lawyer. When you buy lawyer work, Mithril Law becomes your lawyer for that work, under a written limited-scope retainer. This policy covers both, and says which one holds your information at each step.

What we collect

  • Your story and your facts. What you type, say, paste, or upload: names, addresses, emails, amounts, dates, what was agreed, what went wrong, and the documents you attach.
  • Your account. Your email address, and a passkey if you make one. There is no password.
  • Your case record. Every date, form, letter, payment, and note you add.
  • Payments. Stripe processes card payments. We keep the order, the amount, and Stripe's reference. We never see your full card number.
  • Use of the site. Page views and product events (for example, "letter downloaded"), the referral source, and a random draft identifier stored in a cookie. No advertising cookies.

Why we use it

To fill the forms, write the letters, count the deadlines, keep your case record, send you the reminders you turn on, and deliver what you buy. We use aggregate, anonymized counts to publish the Justice Index and to improve the product.

Software that reads your story

When you tell your story, software reads it and your documents to fill the case. That software is an AI model run by Anthropic. Your text and documents are sent to Anthropic for that purpose only. Anthropic's commercial terms say it may not train models on customer content from its API (Anthropic Commercial Terms of Service, section B, effective June 17, 2025, read 2026-09-14). No person reads your story unless you buy lawyer work.

Who else handles your information

Provider What for Where
Railway Hosting and the database United States (Railway US East, Virginia); Railway has no Canadian region
Resend Email: sign-in codes, reminders, letters you ask us to send United States
Stripe Payments Canada and the United States
Anthropic Reading your story and documents; drafting packages United States
PostHog Product analytics, when enabled; sent from our server, no message text United States (PostHog US cloud)

Each provider is bound by its own contract and privacy terms. We do not sell your information. We do not share it with anyone else, except as the law requires.

Letters and reply links

If you ask us to send a demand letter, we email it in your name to the address you give, with a copy to you, and replies go to your inbox. The letter includes a private link the other side can use to reply. That page shows only what the letter already tells them. Their reply is stored in your case and sent to you.

How long we keep it

Your case and documents stay in your account until you delete them. A draft that never becomes an account is tied to a cookie that lasts one year; when the cookie is gone, nobody can reach the draft, and it stays in our database until we delete it or you ask us to. Audit records of documents generated (type, size, time, and a hash of the inputs; never the content) are kept for as long as the service runs, so we can answer questions about a document later. Mithril Law keeps files for the period the Law Society requires.

Your rights

You can see, correct, export, or delete your information. Most of it you can change yourself on your case. For the rest, email privacy@makethempay.ca. We answer within 30 days. You can stop reminder emails with the link in every email.

Cookies

A draft identifier, a selected-case identifier, and a session cookie when you sign in. A referral-source cookie when you arrive from an ad or a poster. Analytics only if enabled, and then without cross-site tracking.

Children

The site is for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

Changes

We will post the date of each change at the top of this page.
