About makethempay.ca
A self-help site for Ontario Small Claims Court, built by a Toronto lawyer. Free official forms filled from your answers, guides that cite the rule for every fact, and licensed lawyers when you want them. Claims up to $50,000.
The founder
Jonathan Kleiman is a licensed Ontario lawyer in Toronto, Law Society of Ontario licence 95128S. He holds a J.D. from the University of Toronto.
He built makethempay.ca after seeing the same pattern in Small Claims Court work for people and small companies: the claim was real, the amount was modest, and a full retainer did not fit. This site is the answer to that pattern.
He practises through Mithril Law, a sole proprietorship at 2 Bloor St. W., Unit 700, Toronto, Ontario M4W 3E2. His earlier project, mithril.law, a law firm rebuilt as software, is where this site started.
Two sellers, named on every line
Everything free on this site, and every software package, is legal information. It is sold by the Make Them Pay team. The free checker, the demand letter, the forms, the calculators, the guides, and the case record give you the rules and the documents. They do not give advice about your case.
Every legal service is sold by Mithril Law under a written retainer: a lawyer's demand letter, a lawyer check of your documents, a 20-minute call, filing done for you, full representation by stage, and the collection of selected judgments on contingency at a maximum of 25%. Legal services provided by Mithril Law — Jonathan Kleiman, licensed Ontario lawyer.
How the content is made and checked
Every guide starts from the primary source: the Rules of the Small Claims Court (O. Reg. 258/98), the Courts of Justice Act, the fee regulation (O. Reg. 332/16), the Limitations Act, 2002, and the official court forms. Each legal fact carries the rule or section it comes from, and the date it was read. The primary sources are listed at the foot of every long page.
A statement that has not yet been checked against the current e-Laws consolidation is marked [VERIFY] on the page, on purpose. We would rather show the gap than hide it. The marker comes off when a lawyer has checked the text against the current law.
The site is written in Simplified Technical English: short sentences, one meaning per word, active voice. Court fees are quoted from the consolidation date stored in our data, and change on January 1, 2027. Interest rates update each quarter.
We never promise an outcome. The brand says make them pay; the pages say we help you pursue what you are owed. Some claims are not worth it, and the free checker says so.
Found an error?
Use the feedback button at the bottom of any page. Tell us the page and the sentence. A rule that changed, a fee that moved, a broken link: we fix it and note the date on the page.
